Focus on playing along with the melody. Try your best to use the correct fingers on different frets. First finger on Fret 1, 2nd finger on Fret 2, etc. The more you focus on getting this right, the faster you will learn to play.

Here is a fairly easy example of adding chords to this melody. For the most part I have added chords as indicated above the staff, but varying where you add chords is perfectly acceptable - even better! Chords don't have to be full 5 or 6 string. Two or three strings work as well.
